Frequently Asked Questions
What families often ask before scheduling
In many cases, a referral is not required to schedule an evaluation. However, Kentucky Medicaid plans typically require a physician referral for coverage. This requirement is set by insurance, not by our practice. We are happy to help families understand what is needed and guide you through the process.
We primarily support infants and toddlers, but we also work with select older children who have oral-motor or myofunctional concerns impacting feeding, breathing, or oral function. If you’re unsure whether your child is a good fit, we encourage you to reach out.
Evaluations typically last about 60 minutes and are designed to be child-led and family-centered. Whenever possible, we observe the area of concern directly — such as a baby feeding at the breast or bottle, or a child eating a snack. If your child is shy or prefers not to eat during the visit, a short video of the concern can be very helpful and is always welcome.
Prior to the evaluation, intake paperwork is sent via email to collect insurance information, consent, and personal details so we can focus our time together on your child and your concerns.
We encourage families to bring items related to the concern, such as bottles, nipples, feeding supplies, cups, or preferred snacks. We do keep a variety of snacks available in our clinic; however, if your child has a favorite or specific food they prefer, bringing it along can be very helpful. If available, short videos of feeding or other concerns observed at home are also welcome. Intake paperwork is completed ahead of time so we can focus our time together on your child and your concerns.
Caregiver involvement is a vital part of our approach. We welcome all caregivers to participate in sessions whenever possible so everyone receives the same education, strategies, and support. While our therapy rooms may have limited space, we do our best to accommodate families and make it work. We also recognize that, at times, a caregiver may need their own support person present. Our goal is to ensure caregivers feel comfortable, supported, informed, and aligned in supporting their child outside of therapy.
Yes, siblings are welcome to attend sessions. We understand that childcare can be challenging, and we strive to make visits as supportive and comfortable as possible for families. We have toys available to help siblings stay engaged while we work together during the session.
Every child’s needs are different. Therapy duration depends on goals, progress, and family comfort level. As moms who have taken our own children to therapy, we understand the time commitment these visits require. Our goal is to help families feel confident and successful at home as soon as possible. We regularly review progress together and discuss recommendations for continued care or discharge.
We completely understand that life with little ones can be unpredictable. Our attendance policy isn’t meant to be strict or stressful — it exists to help keep the schedule running smoothly for all families. Missing an occasional appointment does not automatically mean a discharge or reevaluation. As long as there is open communication and mutual respect for each other’s time, we strive to be understanding and flexible. Our goal is always to support your family, not add pressure.
If you, your child, a sibling, or anyone planning to attend the visit is currently sick or has been ill within the past 48 hours, we ask that you please cancel and reschedule your appointment.
We work closely with medically fragile infants, and it is vital that families feel safe bringing their babies into our office with confidence that we are doing everything possible to minimize illness exposure. For the health and safety of all families, we kindly but firmly ask that appointments be rescheduled when illness is present.
We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us protect the children and families we serve.
